I’m not quite sure anymore when the idea for the giant ceramic duck came about, but I think it was after I took a bread-baking course where we also talked about bread storage. The instructor showed her clay bread box, and I was instantly smitten, even though it wasn’t a duck.

After the idea lived in my mind for years, I finally brought it to life during my studies in London. I had some prior experience working with clay, but never on this scale. Nevertheless, I had a lot of fun, even though there were some challenges to overcome, like fitting the two halves together perfectly. Although the final version isn’t perfect, I’m a bit proud of it. But maybe there will be a second attempt soon.

The design is based on the controversy that ducks shouldn’t be fed bread. So instead of feeding ducks at the lake with bread, why not feed the “pink” duck in the kitchen? It even helps to keep the bread fresh longer!

The Controversy between Ducks and Bread

What goes better with bread than butter?

The complementary offspring of the duck family. The butter dish to the bread box. Now that I had the skill to model ducks, and find them really cute, I had a lot of fun making little ducklings to store the butter, perfectly matching the bread box.
