Krapferl

Krapferl

Traditional Christmas cookies from Burgenland

Krapferl are traditional Austrian cookies, available only for a short period around Christmas. You spend the whole year waiting for these tiny, handmade, sweet treats (with hundreds of different versions) only for them to disappear far too quickly. As part of my cultural heritage, with countless memories tied to baking them and learning recipes from my grandmother, I wanted to capture the essence of this tradition in my project.

By working with food as a short-lived, edible material, I explored the concept of the temporary. I combined old processes and shapes with new recipes I developed, as well as traditional recipes with new forms, to create three-dimensional edible sculptures that both preserve the making process and ensure its relevance for the future.

By deconstructing typical Austrian pastries and combining them with my personal practice of Krapferl making, I reimagined the Austrian teatime experience and as we would say in Austria: Mahlzeit!

Krapferl baking

Krapferl

Waiting for you all year around,

Until your sweetness can be found,

With warmth and whispers of vanilla in the air,

You bring up feelings beyond compare.

Hands covered with chocolate and dusted in flour,

Time ticking by, hour after hour.

Talking, laughing and familiar steps on repeat,

Guided by the rhythm of sugar and heat.

Recipes passed on and time with you treasured,

Moments like these cannot be measured.

A fleeting feeling, yet always repeating,

Christmas remembered in baking and Krapferl eating.

The Krapferl were also a part of the London Design Festival 2025, exhibited in Shoreditch in east London, in the heart of the festival. The pictures above show the exhibition.
